Teacher of the Year

2020 - 2021 Teacher of the Year

Tahira Chandler

Tahira Chandler was born in Detroit, Michigan, and she has been a Georgia Girl since 2007. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from the University of Michigan - Dearborn and her Master of Arts Degree in Mathematics Education from Georgia State University. She began her teaching career in 2010 and has been a proud New Manchester High Jaguar since 2016.

Tahira’s passion for teaching stems from her desire to help math get a better reputation. She believes that all of her students can be successful and is willing to do whatever it takes to help them achieve their goals. Her voice is often heard throughout the halls of New Manchester High School - singing, rapping, and preaching to her students about math. She helped initiate her department’s successful Saturday School Math Bootcamp, and she continues to help close the mathematical achievement gap in Douglas County.

Tahira is a dependable resource, providing teachers with everything from encouragement, teaching materials, technical support, bottled water, birthday songs, and chocolate bars. She loves knowing that when teachers see her face at their door, they know something good is waiting on the other side.

Tahira is a helping hand at New Manchester. Her roles include New Teacher Mentor, Geometry PLC facilitator, Math Sunshine Club Chair, Chess Club Co-Sponsor, and AVID Site Team Member.

In addition to teaching, Tahira enjoys cooking and spending time with her family. She has been married to her husband John since 2011, and they have one math-loving son, John Sylvester.
